Many years ago, a Killer Whale (orca) entered Cowichan Bay and began eating all the salmon, a main source of  food for the Cowichan people.   The people began to sing and pray and  to the creator to send help.

When the creator sent help, he sent it in the form of a Large Bird.  As the bird flew towards Cowichan Bay, His wings would make the sound of thunder as he flapped his wings, and lightening would flash from his eyes as he blinked.  Thus came the name "Thunder Bird"

The Thunder Bird then flew to Cowichan Bay to take the Killer Whale away so the people can eat and live.
